Social Psychology Report, SUSS, Singapore: Identify the EIGHT ‘body shape’ items/statements from the Body Shape Questionnaire
Write the report according to below requirements:
1. Identify the EIGHT ‘body shape’ items/statements from the Body Shape Questionnaire (see the ‘scoring instructions’ document to identify those EIGHT items).
2. Produce the mean score of the EIGHT items/statements so a higher sum score means a higher level of worry about body shape.
3. Identify the TEN ‘self-esteem’ items/statements from the Self-Esteem Scale (see the ‘scoring instructions’ document to identify those TEN items).
4. Reverse code FIVE of the ten items/statements (see the ‘scoring instructions’ document to see which ones need to be reverse coded).
5. Produce the mean of the TEN items/statements, the ones you just reverse coded and the ones you left the way they were so a higher mean score means higher ‘self-esteem’.
(These first 5 steps should be reported under your ‘materials’ section when you describe the ‘body shape’ and ‘self-esteem’ scales)
6. Produce ‘Descriptive Statistics’ on mean ‘age’, ‘self-esteem’ and on mean ‘body shape’ scores.
7. Conduct the appropriate statistical test to investigate if ‘self-esteem’ is predicted by ‘age’ and ‘body shape’.
8. Produce the appropriate graph(s) that demonstrates this relationship – or lack of it.
(The outcomes of steps 6 to 8 should be reported under your ‘results’ section – please also read the ‘format of research report’ document below)

2. THE FORMAT OF THE RESEARCH REPORT
The report needs to include the following sections/headings:
Title (approx. 10-20 words)
A title to briefly tell the reader what this research report is about. Search for examples of titles in published papers.
• Useful tip: refer to the variables you are interested in and maybe the study’s design Abstract (approx. 150-200 words)
Outline of the study focusing on the aims, methodology, main findings, and implications. Your abstract should include 1-2 sentences for each of these:
• Aims (short introduction from literature and research question)
• Methods (including study design, sample)
• Results (main finding(s))
• Conclusion (main theoretical or practical Implications the results may have)
Introduction and background (literature review) (approx. 1300 words)
This sets the scene for the research. It starts with some background from the literature including
findings from previous research and identifies any gaps in our knowledge. The literature review
needs to demonstrate that you have read broadly on the topic and its wider context. It should
conclude with your hypothesis.
Method (approx. 400 words)
This section needs to consist of the following sub-headings:
• Design – You need to include a clear and scientific research design based on what has been
covered in the module and apply it to your research question (e.g. experimental, cross-sectional, etc.)
• Sample – Number and description of overall participants or groups, how your sample was chosen

• Measurements or Materials – Description of any instruments such as questionnaires or an

interview schedule. If you want to include a full existing instrument in your report, this should be provided in an Appendix (refer the reader to it) and will not count towards your word limit.
• Procedure – Detailed data collection procedures so that other researchers can replicate your
methodology if required. Refer to ethical considerations too.
Results (approx. 400 words)
This section should include the correct inferential statistics and graphical representations of your
analysis/results. Graphs and tables should be numbered and titled and they should ALSO be
explained in the main text of this section. Useful things to remember are:
• Provision of a table with means, number of participants, and standard deviation by variable.
The title of a table should be above the actual table (e.g. Table 1. Title)
• Provision of relevant and informative graph(s). The title of a graph should be under the actual graph and it should be referred to as Figure (e.g. Figure 1. Title)
• Provision of inferential statistics (which test you used to find what and what did you actually find, provision of actual statistical numbers and their explanation)
• Are there STATISTICALLY significant associations/findings (such as differences or correlations)?
Discussion (approx. 700 words)
This will summarise the theoretical and/or practical implications that your research findings may have, the limitations of your proposed research, and, potentially, suggestions for follow-up research.
References (no word limit and it does not count towards your word limit)
This should match what you have in the text and be both complete and in the APA STYLE
Appendices (no word limit and it does not count towards your word limit)
