Average (4-5 marks) A large number of the writer’s arguments are unclear/buried, confused/incoherent, and/or irrelevant to the needs of the question or The writer has articulated an insufficient number of arguments.
Needs Work (0-3 marks) There are no arguments in the essay. or The writer’s arguments are completely irrelevant to the needs of the question.

Criteria: Use of Evidence (40 marks)

Grade Criteria Description
Excellent (30-40 marks) The writer has adduced an impressive amount of relevant, clear, detailed, accurate, and non-generic evidence (e.g. quotations, statistics, specific examples, etc.) in support of his/her arguments. The evidence is of such high quality that the reader is highly likely to find the writer’s arguments to be persuasive. The writer has provided clear and comprehensible citations as and where necessary.
Good (24-29 marks) For the most part, the writer has backed up his/her arguments with relevant, clear, detailed, accurate, and non-generic evidence. But the writer falls short of an “Excellent” grade due to (any of) the following reasons: A few arguments are not sufficiently backed with evidence. Some of the evidence used is irrelevant, unclear, inaccurate, and/or excessively generic. Clear and comprehensible citations are missing from some parts of the essay.
Average (16-23 marks) The writer will be awarded an “Average” grade for this row of the rubric if his/her essay displays any of the following weaknesses: A large number of the writer’s arguments are not sufficiently backed with evidence. A large amount of the evidence used is irrelevant, unclear, inaccurate, and/or excessively generic.
Needs Work (0-15 marks) The writer did not back up his/her points with any evidence at all. or The evidence produced by the writer is completely irrelevant to his/her arguments and/or the needs of the question.

Criteria: Analysis / Engagement with NCO111 Study Guide (50 marks)

Grade Criteria Description
